History - Elder speaks to round table

Access to healthy and affordable food has been a challenge for Nunavummiut for many years.

In 2009, the Government of Nunavut statement of priorities Tamapta stressed the importance of meeting basic needs, including affordable, healthy food. The Government of Nunavut decided to prepare and implement a poverty reduction strategy.

In 2010-2011, the Nunavut Roundtable for Poverty Reduction held public gatherings in each of Nunavut’s 25 communities to help develop a territorial poverty reduction plan.

The Makimaniq Plan: A Shared Approach to Poverty Reduction included a commitment to create a Nunavut Food Security Strategy and develop a territorial action plan on food security.

The Nunavut Food Security Coalition and the Nunavut Food Security Strategy are the result of this commitment.
