Causes

Food security is a term that describes when people have access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food, all the time.

Many things affect food security in Nunavut (see below). For example:

  • Having wildlife on the land or groceries in the store.
  • Having money to go hunting or grocery shopping.
  • Having healthy food that is culturally valued.
  • Having knowledge to choose, prepare, and eat healthy food.
     

Because many things interact to affect food security, we formed a broad Coalition to work together to increase food security in Nunavut.
